a process introduced by the World Health Organization to improve patient safety and reduce errors during surgical procedures. There are three phases: checking before induction of anaesthesia; checking after administration of anaesthesia but before start of surgery (referred to as ‘time out’); and checking at the end of the procedure with identification of key concerns for the immediate postoperative period (referred to as ‘sign out’).
