Urachus: From 2 Different Sources


A corded structure which extends from the bladder up to the navel, and represents the remains of the canal which in the FETUS joins the bladder with the ALLANTOIS.

n. the remains of the cavity of the *allantois, which usually disappears during embryonic development. In the adult it normally exists in the form of a solid fibrous cord connecting the bladder with the umbilicus, but it may persist abnormally as a patent duct. —urachal adj.

Allantois

n. the membranous sac that develops as an outgrowth of the embryonic hindgut. Its outer (mesodermal) layer carries blood vessels to the *placenta and so forms part of the *umbilical cord. Its cavity is small and becomes reduced further in size during fetal development (see urachus). —allantoic adj.... allantois
