Syndesmophyte: From 1 Different Sources


n. a bony outgrowth within a ligament, usually within the ligaments of the intervertebral joints, seen in the sero-negative spondyloarthropathies; for example, ankylosing *spondylitis, *reactive arthritis, and *psoriatic arthritis. Fusion of syndesmophytes across the joints between vertebrae contributes to rigidity of the spine, seen in advanced cases of these diseases.

Bamboo Spine

an X-ray appearance of the spine in which there is squaring of the vertebrae and vertical *syndesmophytes that span adjacent vertebrae, so that the spine resembles a stick of bamboo. This results in fusion of the spine with a very limited range of motion. It is seen in ankylosing *spondylitis.... bamboo spine
