Inflammation of the beard area due to infection of the hair follicles, usually with STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS bacteria contracted from infected razors or towels. Pus-filled blisters appear around the follicles. Treatment is usually with antibiotic drugs.
(Barber’s itch.) A chronic staphylococcal folliculitis (infection of the hair follicles with staphylococci bacteria – see STAPHYLOCOCCUS) of the beard area in males, causing a papulopustular in?ammation clearly centred on hair follicles. It must be distinguished from RINGWORM infection of the face and hair follicles (tinea barbae) and from pseudo-folliculitis due to ingrowing hairs. Topical and oral antistaphyloccoccal antibiotics are e?ective.
