n. a broad-spectrum *quinolone antibiotic that can be given orally or by intravenous infusion and is particularly useful against Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, that are resistant to all other oral antibiotics. Side-effects can include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and headache. It is also applied as eye drops or ointment for eye infections and corneal ulcers.
